Advert Analysis

This Advert is advertising the perfume Dior by Natalie Portman. The models facial expression is very serious and proud she looks very determined for what she is doing and confident as she is presented without any clothes, they are using a direct mode, the character type is a known actress, and model who is a woman she is presented as the perfume is for women. The models pose is very interesting as it seems as if she is turning back to look at the camera after someone has called her , she has her hands around her chest to cover the nakedness . The model is not dressed in anything she is naked but has covered herself with her hands the picture is a midshot so you can only see her body up to her waist this suggest that she may be very open minded and confident or comfortable to do this . The lighting is very bright and is a high key which appeals to the eye also the colours are very natural and soft which makes the advert colour more saturated. The setting looks very posh you can barely see the background but it seems as if she is in a rich house. The product is designed in a simple way but has a bow on the lid which is obviously for girls, the bow makes the perfume bottle look girly and nice .The target audience would probably be from 21-35 year old woman the advert appeals to its audience by using a young model that is the same age as the audience and has a bow that matches the bottle this shows that it is targeted to young woman, the target audience could be C2 in the social class category   ,maybe people that are skilled manual worker or into fashion this advert is aimed at woman who are egoists (people who are concered to get the most pleasure for themselves out of life) This advert fits into Maslow hierarchy of needs by promoting creativity ,confidence , self esteem ,security of body and sexual intimacy .This is advert is the fashionista she appears in every glossy magazine also advertisement for many fragrances .The Title is referring the bottle as a woman as it explains the perfume in a metaphor example Miss Dior! And Miss would only be referred to a woman.
This advert is advertising the Maybelline Mascara it is new lash stylist mascara. It is being advertised by Adriana Lima who is very beautiful. Her facial expression is very confident it seems as if she is looking to the side by tilting her head down, she is using an indirect mode of address. This model has been chosen because she is very beautiful, successful and can pose.  A woman has been chosen because men can’t be putting mascara on, this links to the product as it’s a makeup product. The model has been positioned to tilt her head and look sort of sideways and up at the same time this make the eyes bigger (wider) which then shows her lashes even more, her hand is placed at the same height as her eyes which she is holding a mascara and showing the effect it creates this is done so that the effect is seen clearly. The picture of the advert has been taken as a midshot which you can’t really see her clothes but as to what you are able to see she is wearing a black top this may be because it matches the mascara colour and it stands out . The setting is in the streets you can see buildings in the background and a lady walking towards the models way but passing her to the other side this may mean that you can wear the mascara as a daily wear. The lighting is high key as it is very bright this makes the model stand out example her eyes look very bright pure blue and makes lips shiny this makes her beautiful. The colours are very pure and are not really multicoloured they are very saturated. The product is presented in quite a big way about the length of her imagery from her shoulders and to head this is unrealistic but makes the product stand out as its being advertised . The target audience is for young adults such as 18-25 the advert appeals to the audience by using a model that is about the same age who is quite young. The tarhet audience would be C2 in the social class category ,people who are skilled manual workers , this advert is aimed at woman who are egoists (people who are concerned to get the most pleasure for themselves out of life) in the lifestyle category, This advert fits into Maslow hierachy of needs by promoting creativity , morality and safety of resources .This advert is the Beauty bunny as she appears in every advert of maybelline Her catchphrase would be (maybe its Maybelline) she is into every new invention in the beauty industry and reserves the greatest enthusiasm .
Comparing the Adverts
Questions 1) what are the main differences in how the model is represented in your adverts?
The 2 adverts that are going to be compared are both advertising different products by different models. Advert number 1 is advertising a fragrance by Natalie Portman called Dior ,on the other hand Advert 2 is advertising new mascara by Adriana Lima called Maybelline . These are also different companies. The models positioning is very different advert 1 model is looking directly at the audience  using a direct mode of address which straight away appeals to the eye were as on advert 2 the model is looking in an indirect mode of address looking sort of sideways with her head tilted . The size of the product on advert 1 is much smaller than the size of the product on advert 2.The costume on the way the models are dressed is also different, the model in advert 1 is wearing no clothes at all and on advert 2 she is wearing a sort of top. The locations and setting is also different in advert 1 the model is in a sort of house and in advert 2 the model is in the city most likely (New York) this also appeals to the audience as the locations suite the costumes.
Questions 2) Is there a difference in the target audience in terms of social class, lifestyle category or gender? If so, why do you think this is? There is no difference as the gender is both aimed at a woman as they both have make up and fragrance products and the target audience is both aimed at young adults as to why the young models have been chosen this appeal’s to the target audience.
Questions 3) if they have used different persuasive techniques why do you think that is? Advert 2 uses a persuasive technique by referring the perfume as a real woman by naming it Miss Dior this is a metaphor persuasive technique. Furthermore advert 2 uses a persuasive technique by using a slogan such as don’t just apply, style your lashes.
